Race Details 29 km

The 29 km course at Black Lake Race is a demanding mountain route combining runnable terrain, steep climbs, and exposed ridge running with spectacular views over the Norwegian fjords.

THE OPENING PHASE

The race starts at the old school in Vågstranda. The opening section is fast and controlled, with approximately 1–1.5 km on tarmac and gravel roads before the course transitions into trail. Runners enter a short but steep climb up to Lundsfjellet, followed by around 2 km of forest trails. A brief descent leads into the next climb towards Nøta, before descending on the eastern side where the first checkpoint is located.

THE FIRST MAJOR CLIMB

After crossing the old E136, the route climbs steadily towards Svarthammeren. From this point, the character of the race changes dramatically. The ascent to Trollstolen begins immediately and is the most demanding section of the course — gaining over 850 vertical meters in approximately 2 km. This is a decisive part of the race where pacing and strength are crucial.
From the summit of Trollstolen (1141 m), runners are rewarded with breathtaking views before continuing along the high mountain ridge over Stolsaksla and Langfjellet.

THE FINAL STRETCH

The course then reaches Checkpoint 2 at Svartevatnet (861 m), also known as the Black Lake — a key point both physically and mentally. From here, the route climbs again towards Trolltinden (1241 m), the highest point of the race, before continuing along an exposed and scenic ridge across Midttinden and Blåtinden. After Blåtinden, the race turns into a long and technical descent. Approximately 3.5 km later, runners pass the beautiful Fjellsetra before reaching a gravel road and the final checkpoint.
The last 5 km to the finish are fast and runnable, allowing strong runners to push the pace all the way back to Vågstranda.
